Catholic Lay Creative Order

I really wish there was a lay order of Catholic creatives I could join. I’m researching Catholic literary societies and might join the one I found. Ideally, such a society would practice lectio divina daily. There would be weekly meetings to share or critique work. There would be some element of public service related to poetry or the arts, but I’m not sure what. I don’t know what the community needs. Chapters could meet online to allow members to meet their family responsibilities while serving their creative vocations faithfully to the Lord.

If such a thing already exists, I can’t find it and my priest didn’t know about it. But it feels like the perfect union of creative and spiritual life. It feels like something that should exist. But seemingly it doesn’t, and who am I to start such a thing? I’m just joining the Church, my health is unpredictable, and I am far from saintly enough to start any sort of church organization. But I’m going to pray about it. I feel like something needs to be gotten together.

But first I need to research what devotions and prayer life look like in lay orders that exist, and practice this new discipline of daily lectio divina and creative practice in my own life. I was good about creating daily, but depression and tiredness sometimes affect that. I do lectio divina with a friend once a week, but I need to do it daily on my own as well. I need to get closer to God. Ever closer.

  1. Hi Lisa,

When I came back to Catholic Church I was longing for God so badly. I started with reading Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours, a short version which after a while was not enough. I transitioned to Full Catholic Version Liturgy of the Hours-Daily devotion. “Divine Intimacy” was another book that changed my meditation experience. It’s a Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Boston book. Daily Rosary changed everything and calmed my mind. Also, Catholic Gregorian Chants can be a great experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_SpuTnYJEA&list=RDu_SpuTnYJEA&start_radio=1 but you may already know that.

I wish you have a wonderful experience with the most beautiful Love that is God:)

    1. Hi Marta,

Thank you for your sweet welcome. I will look up Divine Intimacy and look into the Liturgy of Hours. And thank you for sharing that playlist! It is beautiful. I love it. May God bless you!
